Walking Around Jakarta

Not being brave enough to navigate the city bus system - you board the buses on platforms situated in the median of a busy street - I was limited to central Jakarta for sightseeing, and as jet-lagged as I was, that was just fine. Several of us made our way around the neighborhood near the hotel, and we took pictures of MONAS, Indonesia's national monument, and also the cathedral and main mosque. Standing underneath MONAS likely reminds many Americans of the Washington monument, though the design for MONAS is a bit more elaborate. At this location, you are in the very center of Jakarta, in the middle of a huge park. As far as the eye can see in every direction...neighborhood upon neighborhood, and countless human lives, woven together in patterns extending farther than my mind can apprehend.
